Coach K is retired. But his final season revealed small moments where big leadership shone through.
For example, North Carolina beat Duke in the final home game of Coach K’s career. A ceremony to fete the coach happened after the game. Cameron was packed. In a moment designed for him, Coach K grabbed the mic and said, "That performance was unacceptable. You fans deserve more."
That was a leadership masterclass. On a night staged to celebrate him, Coach K showed his team and his fans what mattered most: they did.
Here are twelve other tiny-but-gigantic leadership lessons from Coach K this season:
Gracious. When flattered, Coach K is quickly thankful and then talks about his team, his task, the competition, or the fans. He rarely lingers to speak of himself.
Undivided. Coach K's attention is undivided. His exclusive focus is on his team, the now, and duty. When asked how he was feeling after his final loss, he said, "I'll worry about myself later."
Reflective. Each game before tipoff, when fanfare is highest, Coach K pulls out a chair, turns his back to the court, and prepares his thoughts. He’s quiet and reflective in the storm.
Servitude. After Duke's final loss, Coach K's only cared how "his kids" were doing. He said, "They're in tears. They feel terrible. Our focus is to help them.
Appropriate Praise & Prods. When Coach K's team needs direction, he strikes. He screams. He points. But only when needed, never more. Coach K is just as quick to praise his players.
Realistic. Foes are respected. Coach K never underestimates the other team. Neither should you.
Adaptable. Coach K adapts as the season and game move forward. Players evolve, chemistry evolves, and his combinations and plans flex as the team learns and grows.
Direct. Coach K answers questions directly and honestly, without much flourish.
Respect. "That team was terrific" is usually the first thing Coach K says after a loss.
Focused. Coach K always addresses what matters: in their final game, he said, simply, we did our best.
No regrets. After 42 years, Coach K has no regrets. "I gave it my all."
N.D. Wilson said, "Glory is sacrifice, glory is exhaustion, glory is having nothing left to give." Coach K sacrificed, exhausted his energy, and gave it his all. It indeed has been a glorious journey.
