The Future of MOD-ifiable Software
A new way of building software encourages developers to “genetically alter” its behavior.
My first contribution to Forbes! I was invited to be a part of their technology council and will begin to write bylines. As a warm-up, I added a “quick prediction” in this article on “6 Tech Leaders’ Predictions For Top Trends Coming To Online Services and the Web.”
My pick was ‘MOD-ifiable’ software, a way to build products that allow developers to add behavioral, thematic, or visual enhancements that act like native features.
MODS have impacted the gaming industry, where developers add players, levels, or even entire worlds to their favorite video games. And they're coming to enterprise software to let developers inject automated bot actions, machine learning algorithms, or visual elements into apps, such as business intelligence tools.
MOD-ifiable software helps firms safely “genetically alter” the software they use to suit their specific requirements and unleash the creativity of open source developers without re-writing tools from scratch.
