Seasonality at the Speed of Thought
An innovative way to see seasonality from the University of Maryland.
Seasons don’t only occur in nature. Episodic conditions influence decisions of all kinds: changes in the weather impact supply chains, fast fashion trends drive product decisions, and sentiment can influence marketing tactics. A team from the University of Maryland invented a cool way to understand seasonality in data in our latest hackathon.
Their submission, the “Seasonality Mod,” won with its elegance. It dynamically colors a line chart by seasons instantly by moving a slider. See it at work below—I choose “3” to see quarters; “6” to see 6-months; “12” to see years. Discrete colors make each period pop.
Mods are much more than custom visualizations. They modify the Spotfire engine like you modify a gaming engine. By extending the engine, you unlock possibilities by mixing in other visualizations, machine learning models, and real-time data. Watch the video below to watch it at work with avocado sales data:
Gapingvoid reminds us that you do your best work by getting people to do theirs. We designed Mods with this in mind, and Team Terps gives us a great example. Congratulations!
