On M&A, Culture and Diversity

Some people think when a big company buys a small company, the big company’s culture prevails. Sometimes it’s the other way around.

TIBCO acquired Orchestra Networks two years ago. At the time, 45% of the team in Vietnam were women. Despite our efforts to diversify engineering, Orchestra was doing it better. We embraced their approach and culture. In two years, our Vietnam team has almost doubled in size. We’ve embraced Vietnam’s career path strategy designed to support the unique challenges faced by women.

We're better together, too. TIBCO provides the Vietnam team a global footprint. They collaborate with TIBCO teams all over the world. They participate in global programs like She Loves Data, which helps provide education for young women in technology. They’re part of our partnership with the Mercedes AMG Formula One racing team and the learnings we get from them.

Not only is the Vietnam team high-performing, but they’re also a lot of fun! They bring new energy to International Women’s Day and TIBCO Active Day. Check out our pre-COVID pictures of those programs.

And we’re still growing. We’re building two more teams modeled on their inclusive, high-performing culture. We’re hiring data scientists, engineers, and managers.

Harvard Business Review said Enough Already with the Business Case about Diversity (it’s time for action.) M&A is a unique opportunity to jump-start cultural change, and the TIBCO Vietnam story is a good example of putting good intentions into action.
