A Food Nutrition Datathon For Good

This introductory-level datathon is a great way to learn data analytics, forecasting, and storytelling skills, while learning about the food we eat.

Between 1975 and 2008, the number of products in the average supermarket swelled from an average of 8,948 to almost 47,000. Our choices can be good or bad depending on what foods you choose, how much of it you eat, when you eat, and your unique body chemistry.

One way to understand those decisions is through data.

So, I’m happy to invite the community to the latest event from She Loves Data. Along with Merck (aka, MSD) they’re hosting a free “datathon” to help train and inspire the community with data analytics by showing you how to explore nutritional data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

This is NOT a “hackathon for hackers.” It’s an accessible, basic introduction to data analytics, using nutrition as a learning tool.

The datathon will have individual quests and a team challenge. Individual quests will have four multiple-choice questions and four short questions. An example of individual quest questions: Is eating fresh food really better?

The team challenge will be more, well, challenging. Attendees will collect their own nutrition/food intake data and compare it to the USDA FoodData Central nutritional tables, which has five sets of data:

  1. Foundation Foods

  2. Experimental Foods

  3. National Nutrient Database Standard Reference Legacy Release

  4. Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) 2017-2018

  5. USDA Global Branded Food Products Database (Branded Foods)

Datathons like this are a great way to learn data analytics, forecasting, and storytelling skills, while also learning about the food we eat. It’s a great way to network with peers and collaborate with leading analytics experts from the Spotfire community.

SLD is a wonderful volunteer program that we’re proud to work with. You can learn more about their mission here. Participants will attend the one-week datathon beginning October 9, Saturday. Group Presentations and Awards will be announced on October 16.

The datathon is online, global, and free for everyone in the TIBCO Spotfire community. Registration closes on Thursday, October 7th, so register now here!
