The Mods Grandmaster Flash Challenge
What Les Paul and Chuck Berry did for the electric guitar and piano, Flash did for the turntable. Jay-Z said this of Joseph Saddler, otherwise known as Grandmaster Flash. Best known for his contribution to the groundbreaking rap song, The Message, Grandmaster Flash was the first DJ to put his hands on the record and move it rather than just letting it play. He used crayon, fluorescent pen, and grease pencil to mark vinyl with signposts for creativity.
Recently, we released a new software framework we call Spotfire Mods. The name comes from how it lets you lay your hands on Spotfire and modify how it works like Flash did with the turntable. You can add new visualizations, data exploration behaviors, and AI models as you wish. All you have to do is get inspired and scratch!
To help inspire you, we'll flash some ideas to spark your imagination. We call it the Mods Grandmaster Flash Challenge. I started a few weeks ago with this post about Florence Nightingale’s Coxcomb Chart. Wouldn’t it be a great Spotfire visualization? Could you make it real-time? Add predictive models? What business problems could you solve using it as a signpost?
The Mods are already starting to roll in. You’ll see them soon and I hope our Mods Grandmaster Flash Challenge inspires you to get your fingers scratching out cool Mods!
Here’s how to get started. Visit the Spotfire Mods community page. Or watch this Doctor Spotfire Mods 101 session. And watch for monthly hackathons—customers, students, and partners will all be invited. Submissions will be eligible for our monthly Mod of the Month contest. Mods Masters can run their own Modathons. Winning Mods will be featured in the TIBCO Blog, the TIBCO Community, and tagged on social media.
